The Archives of A Newman

In the month of September, 2009 I mused about the following things below, and you guys responded with ?? comments thanks you guys...

Can I come to your Windows parttty?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Part of me thinks this might be some clever Microsoft marketing managers "Out Of The Box" idea but it works with @creativereview and a host of others tweeting about it this morning, or it could be Cabels own handy-work and nothing to do with Microsoft.

Check out obvious continuity errors are amusing (LCD clock) .. take a look and have a good megalolz at what adding a few well placed bleeps can do to the narrative of the advert.

I really hope if it's not Microsoft endorsed (Secretly) then they don't try and pull the viral , a bit of humor / turning a blind eye might go a long way to resolving some of the trolling that goes on about it's products & services.

Continuing my love off all things white came across this little gem on the excellent missionbicycle.com site.

White White White From Mission Cycles

The site has a most excellent selection of bikes and a great builder, just a shame I can't get one of these shipped to the UK.. probably a good thing I would of been a good £500 worse off right now.

I haven't owned a bike for such a long time but I'm really craving after the fresh air flowing through my hair do.. esp when I finally manage to get myself to Bristol.. look out park street I'm gonna be fixie flying down your road!

( Ah that just gave me an idea ... rubs hands )

Oh and here's the inverted bike Night Rider ... nice!

Brave Moves: City of Melbourne Identity – Birmingham Take Note

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Love the work done on this re-brand by the guys over at Landor Associates, Sydney .I think any city which is prepared to do something radical deserves a massive thumbs up.

Old Branding

New Branding

It's not just a brand, It's something which screams that this city (Melbourne) is moving forward, innovative, original, creative, massive plus points for growing it's creative industries & increasing tourism.

Now if only we (as designers) could convince Birmingham UK to ditch their awful fugly Council logo

Or at least fully adopt the B logo (below), it's not great but it's still an improvement on the current blue red monstrosity (above) which is around 20 yrs old - (if anyone knows the history of the logo please do comment)

I'm not the first to suggest that Birmingham City Council could do with a re-brand even the words of Mr Wolff - Wolff Olins seem to have fallen on deaf councilors ears.

Michael Wolff, co-founder of brand agency Wolff Olins, described the "b in Birmingham" logo as "like a bus stop without the details of the bus service".

His comments made in the Birmingham Post Oct 29 2007 (reported by Joanna Geary) still ring true almost two years later.

The thing that frustrates me ( especially as i'm a Birmingham boy originally) is the lack of innovation regarding it's branding and marketing in a city which as Micheal Wolff declares is "pregnant with creative talent".

Birmingham I feel needs to take a note from Melbourne and do something brave with it's Identity.. throw out the politics and employ a creative midwife ( some one like Peter Saville to deliver the baby which long past term.
